Subcontractor Charges

Did you know that as a subcontractor you don't have to wait to be paid by the head builder. In certain circumstances you can go around the builder to the Principal above to get paid - by using a Subcontractors Charge.

What you need to know

Principals are required to put certain money aside to ensure that all subcontractors and their employees are paid by the builder they have hired.

If a builder has insolvency issue or refuses to pay you (ie to preserve their own cash flow), you can issue a "Subcontractors Charge" to the Principal which effectively requires the Principal to divert money from the builder that is for you.

There are certain steps to be taken, but a Subcontractors Charge is also an effective tool to alert a Principal to a Builder who may not be doing the best job.
